Plenty of Middle East-flavored drama unfolded at the United Nations Thursday as Syria called for a vote to try to obstruct Israel’s acceptance to the U.N. Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). COPUOS promotes and oversees exploration of space for peaceful purposes. After bitter debate, Israel secured enough votes, along with El Salvador, Oman, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and UAE, to join the committee.
While the job of COPUOS today is about using space for peaceful purposes only, we imagine they are also seeking to keep our planet safe from Alien Invaders, like Will Smith does in Men in Black.
Maybe Syrians wanted the Israeli’s off the group because Assad wants to make a pact with future alien invaders to secure his kingdom?
Of course Syria and other Israel-haters have no problem with El Salvador being on the committee, even though they have not space experience. Or Sri Lanka. But hey, experience never meant anything at the UN.
